Since Charlie, the main character in my novel, is an aspiring screenwriter who has plotted her own devirginization campaign - one that doesn't go as scripted - I thought an appropriate theme for this month would be: an alphabetical romp through the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright scary representations of virginity in film. Warning - be prepared for adult content / strong language if you follow my posts this month.

A is for American Pie (1999)
The premise: "Four teenage boys enter a pact to lose their virginity by prom night."Infamous line: "This one time, at band camp, I stuck a flute in my pussy." Yeah, gross and ewwww - now you know why it's infamous. This film is all about the ick factor.
Infamous scene: The warm apple pie thing, of course. I'll never look at a pie cooling on a counter in quite the same way. And I thought Yogi Bear was a bad boy.
Overall thoughts: I think Roger Ebert's 1999 review says it best, "It is not inspired, but it's cheerful and hard-working and sometimes funny, and--here's the important thing--it's not mean. Its characters are sort of sweet and lovable. As I swim through the summer tide of vulgarity, I find that's what I'm looking for: Movies that at least feel affection for their characters. Raunchy is OK. Cruel is not.".

Not a fan of American Pie but I did see it. I just can't handle raunchy. Fascinating seeing Ebert's comment though. I actually don't mind cruel characters if there is a reason behind it that is developed properly in the context of the story. Haha, sorry so much writer speak in that sentence. Cheers for a great start on A!

I'm not a huge fan of this film, but it's one of those ones that if it's on TV and I stumble across it, I won't instantly switch the channel. I'll watch for a while... I've actually been using it as a comparison to my WIP in Twitter pitches because my story is about an amputee trying to lose his virginity.

Hey Kate - thanks for dropping by. Hope your WIP finds a home soon!

I can't believe I've never seen this film! Yes, it's vulgar, but such a part of pop culture. I guess I need to rectify things and finally watch it.

And...they made sequels. The first one had some charm, but I felt no need to see any of the other ones. Actually, I won't even stop the changing the channels to see any on this one either.
Good pick though for devirginization (I like that you made up a word).

American Pie is one of those classic movies - not a huge fan myself and didn't manage all of the sequels.

I did laugh my way through the first film...can't remember the others, although I'm sure I rented them at some point. Thanks for dropping in, guys!

Only watched the first! Based on that, I felt that I could guess what might happen in all the others...wasn't that interested I guess.
Song about virginity? Can't think of any...except for Madonna's Like a Virgin. Which is not really. Ha.
