This month is all about discovering new blogs, meeting new friends, and spreading the word about the launch of my young adult novel, MY SOON-TO-BE SEX LIFE, (Bloomsbury Spark, June 2014) by participating in this mega, 26 posts blog challenge.
Since Charlie, the main character in my novel, is an aspiring screenwriter who has plotted her own devirginization campaign - one that doesn't go as scripted - I thought an appropriate theme for this month would be: an alphabetical romp through the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright scary representations of virginity in film. Warning - be prepared for adult content / strong language if you follow my posts this month.

Thanks for joining me on this journey through virginity on film. Let's wrap up with ZEE musical ode to the V card - Madonna's, Like a Virgin...

Y is for The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)
Honestly, all I remember about this movie is laughing my ass off every time Steve Carell swore. Which was a lot. Which is probably why I loved the film. Bonus, this script was co-written by Steve Carell and he probably swore a shitload while cranking up the word count.
The premise: "Goaded by his buddies, a nerdy guy who's never "done the deed" only finds the pressure mounting when he meets a single mother."
Great monologue while riding a bike: "Yeah, well, virgin's not a dirty word. You know what's a dirty word, is asshole, and that's what you guys are. You know, I may not have had sex, but I could fuck you up."

X is for SeX Drive (2008)
This film is an adaptation of the 2007 novel, All the Way by Andy Behrens and follows in the wake of Fast Times at Ridgemont High and American Pie. It's crude, rude, and yet all about love.
The premise: "A high school senior drives cross-country with his best friends to hook up with a babe he met online."
Line of note: "What do you know about girls? I've never even seen you with a girl."

W is for Wish 143 (2009)
A dying teen's last wish is to lose his virginity. Not quite what the wish-fullfilling charity was thinking when he was selected.
The premise: "Tells the story of a young man desperate to come of age before time runs out."
The premise: "Tells the story of a young man desperate to come of age before time runs out."
BBC synopsis: "An Oscar®-nominated drama about a fifteen-year-old boy with only months to live, who is granted one final wish from the Dreamscape Charity. But David doesn't want to go to Disneyland or meet Gary Neville; what he really wants is an hour alone with a naked woman."
This sounds like an amazing short film...I haven't been able to find it online though and am simply spreading the word in case YOU get a chance to watch it.

V is for The Virgin Suicides (1999)
The Virgin Suicides is based on the 1993 novel by Jeffrey Eugenides and was adapted for film by the director, Sophia Coppola, daughter of Francis Ford Coppola. (Sophia Coppola also wrote and directed Lost in Translation, another of my favourite films.) Set in the 70s, this dark and nostalgic tale takes a haunting look at a "first time", first love, first infatuation, first heartbreak that turned out to be a tragic last.
The premise: "A group of male friends become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents."
Great line: "We knew that they knew everything about us, and that we couldn't fathom them at all."
Great tagline: "Beautiful, mysterious, haunting, invariably fatal. Just like life."
Overall thoughts: Here's an excerpt from Roger Eberts' 2000 review: "The worship the girls receive from the neighborhood boys confuses them: If they are perfect, why are they seen as such flawed and dangerous creatures? And then the reality of sex, too young, peels back the innocent idealism and reveals its secret engine, which is animal and brutal, lustful and contemptuous.
In a way, the Lisbon girls and the neighborhood boys never existed, except in their own adolescent imaginations. They were imaginary creatures, waiting for the dream to end through death or adulthood. "Cecilia was the first to go," the narrator tells us right at the beginning. We see her talking to a psychiatrist after she tries to slash her wrists. "You're not even old enough to know how hard life gets," he tells her. "Obviously, doctor," she says, "you've never been a 13-year-old girl." No, but his profession and every adult life is to some degree a search for the happiness she does not even know she has."

U is for AdventUreland (2009)
Again, I'm pushing the "u" link here but let's just go with it, okay? Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg seem to go for similar roles, but I do love their mastery of the angsty geek looking for their one true geekette. Eisenberg shines in this flick, as does Kristen Stewart.
The premise: "In the summer of 1987, a college graduate takes a 'nowhere' job at his local amusement park, only to find it's the perfect course to get him prepared for the real world."
Great lines that say it all about infidelity: "You don't even appreciate what you have. You're chasing after Lisa P. when you have this incredible, beautiful girl right fucking there. Fuck this."
Famous scene: The "You're a virgin?" confession scene - a nice change in that the guy's the one with less experience and is emotionally vulnerable. Check it out in the clip...

T is for The To Do List (2002)
Ah, another virgin with a penchant for lists...
The premise: "Feeling pressured to become more sexually experienced before she goes to college, Brandy Klark makes a list of things to accomplish before hitting campus in the fall."
Dialogue on the complexity of sex: "Sex is a big deal, but it's also not a big deal. Don't get me wrong, it's a big deal. But it doesn't have to be such a big deal."
Brilliant tagline: "She's going from straight A's to her first F."

S is for Superbad (2007)
Like Juno, I adored this script for pushing limits and changing my perception of what was doable on screen with teen lead characters. And while it's not outright announced....come on....can these guys be anything other than first timers?
The premise: "Two co-dependent high school seniors are forced to deal with separation anxiety after their plan to stage a booze-soaked party goes awry."
Famous line: "You know when you hear girls say 'Ah man, I was so shit-faced last night, I shouldn't have fucked that guy?' We could be that mistake!"
Famous scene: there are so many hilarious moments in this film, but one of the most emotional...is the drunken sleepover scene. This is bromance at its best.

R is for The Rules of Attraction (2002)
A love triangle complete with the added complications of virginity and bisexuality, this film is based on a novel written by Bret Easton Ellis who also penned American Psycho.
The premise: "The incredibly spoiled and overprivileged students of Camden College are a backdrop for an unusual love triangle between a drug dealer, a virgin, and a bisexual classmate."
Screwed up logic line: "Since when does fucking somebody else mean that I'm not faithful to you?"
Great scene: Lauren, the girl Sean is lusting after / falling for, turns him down.

Q is for Quills (2000)
The Marquis De Sade's controversial writings have been fodder for censors since the 1800s. This film highlights his later years and romanticizes his interest in a young, virginal laundress working at the asylum where he is imprisoned during his final years.
The premise: "In a Napoleonic era insane asylum, an inmate, the irrepressible Marquis De Sade, fights a battle of wills against a tyrannically prudish doctor."
Great line which should be the motto for censorship: "Suppose one of your precious inmates attempted to walk on water and drowned. Would you condemn the Bible? I think not."
Great tagline: "Meet the Marquis de Sade. The pleasure is all his."
